Computer programming. Fun. Kids.

These are words that most consider an unlikely mix, especially when you throw in another seemingly unwelcome word like Python. Children’s book author Warren Sande, and his inquisitive partner in crime Carter, take the task to hand and mix the words well.

Hello World! Programming for Children and Other Beginners is a clear and easy to digest voyage through the beginnings of programming with Python. The ease of navigation is supported through the balanced teaming of an author experienced in programming and a novice that isn’t afraid to ask the questions that most of us would likely let pass accompanied by a glazed look. The core elements of Python programming are clearly explained in terms and concepts that anyone, at just about any age, can understand.

By having a junior author involved in the learning process, the reader can quickly identify with the questions being asked to either reinforce the concept that they have learned, or if required, cling to it like a life preserver until they come to a better understanding. It’s a good writing strategy that not only supports an even paced read and lesson, but makes the task at hand genuinely more enjoyable.

If you have ever been interested in learning a contemporary programming language, with a variety of uses, you should get this book.

In using the book’s approach, you can be sure that Python won’t bite, and neither will Carter… at least I don’t think so.

Here's a good special article from Popular Mechanics on the shift in content creation which will inevitably marginalize the Hollywood hype machine.

I strongly believe in the concept of bringing the content creator and the viewer closer together, and eliminating the bulk in the middle that is distribution and promotion. This will allow the content to speak for itself, and put the financial rewards more directly to the creators.

It will be a long road of paradigm shifts, technology developments and changing consumer attitudes, but it will happen eventually.

Along with the new computer, they have released an application, based on their core image technology, called Photo Booth that takes the classic photobooth one crazy step further.

The Supernatural?

Strange but interesting. This is a car advertisement from Great Britain.

When they finished filming the ad, the film editor noticed something moving along the side of the car, like a ghostly white mist. They found out that a person had been killed a year earlier in that exact same spot. The ad was never put on TV because of the unexplained ghostly phenomenon.

Watch the front end of the car as it clears the trees in the middle of the screen and you’ll see the white mist crossing in front of the car then following it along the road….Spooky!

Is it a ghost, or is it simply mist? You decide.

Although it's a bit hard to hear, if you turn up the sound and listen to the ad, you’ll hear the cameraman whispering in the background about it near the end.

Originally I was just going to show a some cool office gear like the enviro-friendly "stapleless" stapler.

They can be found at sites like UncommonGoods.com or by doing a Google search.

While poking around, I came across VirtualStapler.com.

How great is that?

Lego is a fantastic "toy" for building and creating cool vehicles, buildings and whatever else kids can think of.

Some people create intricate sculptures and other art with lego as well. Now the commoner can express themselves artistically with a tool called - the Brick-o-lizer.

You only need to upload a picture, make some adjustments, and Lego will send you a kit of parts and a custom instruction sheet to put together your mosaic.

Oh, and a credit card helps too.

Here is one that we made some time ago. It works well when it's placed in an area that can be viewed from a distance, then seen up close.

The results of pairing of technology with vehicles continues to amaze me. There have been incredible improvements in performance and safety in recent years.

These technical improvements aren't limited to those categories though.

The after-market "bling" possibilities are about to get a bit more interesting and obnoxious.

Here is the next step up from glowing air nozzle caps on car tires. These ones are programmable and display words and shapes when the wheels spin.

This particular application of Flickr allows for generating pretend magazine covers.

There is a Flickr Group of magazine covers that others have created here.

The near ubiquity of the internet has changed the way many of us find answers to our questions. Through the ability to immediately access information, I often obviously go to the net instead of a book or the library. Additionally, it has allowed individuals to distribute audio, text, video and photos quickly and at low or no cost. It's all about immediacy.

The written word or photographs in books are different. Other than the latest and greatest Harry Potter novel, there typically isn't an urgency with books. There is something about holding something that contains volumes of words and pictures on pages that can easily be kept and passed around to friends and families. This sense of difference, and value of a book, may change over the generations, but I feel that it is deeply planted in current generations.

Previously, publishing a book was limited to the very talented and those lucky enough to convince a publisher to invest, distribute and sell their works.

Technology is changing that in a big way.

The definition of desktop publishing is shifting into one of true desktop publishing. Machines that can print several digital pages per second and bind them into books, have made printing of individual books on demand an economical reality. No more minimum runs of hundreds of books that need to be stored and distributed. The publishing model has changed - who needs a traditional publisher, with condesending attitudes, overgrown eyebrows and the smell of old paper now?

I'm in Fremont California this week back at HQ of the company I work for.

This has put a serious "hole" in the Bucket-o-cool just as I'm slowly filling it up.

It's ironic that I'm in the heart of internet technology mecca, and am without my mac and my usual tools for posting content. I am at a disadvantage for sharing any internet coolness.

Hmmm, I'll have to see what I can cobble together from the hotel tonight.
